What's being monitored:
- Vector-borne disease: Since 2017 in Pa.: Asian lonhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis) is an invasive spiecies spreading throughout Pennsylvania and other states. Pa. Environmental Protection article, PSU Ext. article, PSU Ext. Ticks & Disease. This tick can infect humans with a virus that causes severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome. Which may lead to a fatal hemorrhagic fever. This virus has not yet been found in any of the ticks in the U.S.
- Vector-borne disease: 2025-07-18 Philadelphia health department warns of mosquito-borne West Nile virus. PSU Extension, CDC
- Vector-borne disease: West Nile Virus and the Jamestown Canyon Virus can both infect humans and both have been detected in multiple counties. page on this issue. Pa. Dept. of Environmental Protection
- Harmful algal bloom: Lake Somerset, Tamarack Lake, Avoid Contact (2025-06-30)
- TMI: Three Mile Island nuclear power plant reactor is being restarted. Apparently, it was shut down because it wasn't profitable for the operator. The plant is being put back into service to power a Microsoft data center. Send any info about this to PaEMT.
If you live within about a 50 mile radius please consider getting a Safecast radiation detector and putting it online with the Safecast network.
- Bills in the Pa. Legislature regarding EMS. I hope to post a write-up, within the next few weeks (2025-07-18).
- 911 Outage: 2025-07-19 Dauphin County communications center had a total outage of both 911 and non-emergency phone numbers. Last week (Friday evening July 11 until Saturday morning July 12th) there was a partial outage of 911 statewide.
